This obesity surgery involves removing a large portion of the stomach to create a narrow tube, calibrated using a probe during the procedure. It’s important to note that the excess part of the stomach is permanently removed.
Food moves more slowly through the tube and is then passed into the small intestine. As a result, the patient must eat small amounts slowly. Additionally, this operation leads to a decrease in the level of ghrelin (the hormone responsible for appetite), which is secreted in the part of the stomach that is removed. This causes a feeling of fullness to occur very quickly during meals.
The surgical procedure lasts about one hour, and hospitalization typically lasts two days.
On the first day after surgery, Dr. Abecassis will visit you in the morning to check that there are no post-operative complications. Blood tests will be performed on both the first and second days after the procedure.
A pureed diet will be allowed starting from the second day.
Gastric bypass, also known as gastric rerouting, is a procedure that involves bypassing a large portion of the stomach, the duodenum, and the beginning of the small intestine.
The surgical technique involves dividing the stomach into two unequal parts, creating a small vertical pouch approximately the size of a glass of water. This pouch is then connected directly to the small intestine. The small intestine is cut 50 centimeters from its origin, and the downstream portion is connected to the stomach. The two parts of the small intestine are reconnected one and a half meters below the stomach connection.
The first effect of this bariatric surgery is restriction. After the operation, food now goes into the small gastric pouch, which allows the patient to feel full more quickly and to eat significantly smaller amounts.
The second effect is malabsorption. Before the procedure, fats were absorbed in the bypassed part of the intestine with the help of bile and pancreatic enzymes. After the bypass, fats are eliminated directly in the stool without being absorbed. The combination of restriction and malabsorption results in significant weight loss.
The surgery lasts about two hours, and hospitalization typically lasts four days.
Blood tests are performed on the 2nd and 4th days after surgery. Food intake is gradually reintroduced starting from the 2nd day.
The dietitian team will provide you with post-operative nutritional guidance during your hospital stay.
